In 1921, Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. was founded as Japan's first domestic sewing machine manufacturer. Through periods of great change, we have continuously endeavored to create products that bring enjoyment to our customers, using the best of our technological capabilities and strong spirit to embrace a challenge. During this time, we have been grateful for the unwavering support of our customers.

With our hand-cranked sewing machines we created the first stitch and even today, we are delivering household sewing machines that anyone can easily use, all around the world. Furthermore, this technology is applied to our industrial equipment which will support the new era and those to come.

In 2021 we will celebrate the 100th anniversary of our founding and we will continue supporting your creativity and continue taking on new challenges.

Based on the corporate colors used for the company name, this design expresses Janome's roots as a sewing machine manufacturer celebrating its centenary. As an expression of gratitude for the past 100 years, the logo incorporates a product from the time of our founding as a motif.

Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd. will celebrate its 100th anniversary on October 16, 2021.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our customers and many other stakeholders who have supported us and our products for 100 years.

Since our founding in Takinogawa, Tokyo, we have worked as Japan's first domestic sewing machine manufacturer, to develop and improve creative culture through the manufacture and popularization of household sewing machines. There are various factors that enable a company to continue to grow but we believe in our case that it is a "trust" relationship which has been built with our customers that has facilitated our development. Supported by loyal patronage for 100 years, we would like to express our deep gratitude and respond by further improving the quality and attractiveness of our products and services.

Small hand-cranked sewing machine, which is said to be the first domestically produced sewing machine is completed.

Yosaku Ose

In Takinogawa, Tokyo, Yosaku Ose founds "Pine Sewing Machine Factory" with Shigeru Kamematsu and Shoichi Tobimatsu.

First standard domestic sewing machine for home use is launched. A vertical half-turn shuttle is used for the bobbin thread mechanism, dramatically improving work efficiency.

Company name changed to "Teikoku Sewing Machine Co., Ltd."
"Janome Sewing Machine" registered as a trademark.

The origin of "Janome"The origin of "Janome" (meaning the eye of the snake in Japanese) comes from the fact that the bobbin used by Model 30 (Pine 100 type) had a round shape similar to a snake's eye, so the company's sewing machines started to be called "Janome" machines. The body of the sewing machine also had a snake-eye pattern.

The Koganei Factory

The Koganei Factory, the first factory in Japan for the mass production of sewing machines is completed.

At the request of Masuzou Maeda, a representative of the Imperial Sewing Machine Company (predecessor of Janome), the standard dimensions of domestic household sewing machines are unified, and this sewing machine category is called "household HA-1 type".

The modern exterior designed by industrial designer Jiro Kosugi is selected in 1st place in the "2nd Mainichi Industrial Design Competition", and so started an era of sewing machine design competition between companies.

Company name changed to "Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd."

The appearance of a fully automatic zigzag sewing machine is heralded. Instead of moving the lever and dial by hand, it becomes possible to sew patterns using a part called a cam.

Released to commemorate the Tokyo Olympics. Made of light alloy die-cast, the industry's first in-house production. Weight is half that of a conventional sewing machine.
